Census 2011

The study of population is called DEMOGRAPHY.
The 15th Indian Census was conducted in two phases, house listing and population enumeration. House listing phase  involved collection of information about all buildings. Information for National Population Register was also collected in the first phase, which will be used to issue a 12-digit unique identification number to all registered Indian residents by Unique Identification Authority Of India.  Census has been conducted in India since 1872 and 2011 marks the first time biometric information was collected. According to the provisional reports released on 31 March 2011, the Indian population increased to 121 crore with a decade growth of 17.64%.
National Population Policy 2000 –
  • Promote & Control communicable diseases.
  • Promote delayed marriage of girls.
  • Making school education compulsory.
Demographics –
  • Census 2011 is the 15th census & 7th after Independence.
  • First synochronized census in india took place in 1881, Since 1901. It has been taking place after every decade.
  • The slogan of census 2011 is “Our census, Our future”.
  • India was the first country to adopt family planning in the world.

  • Total Population – 1,21,08,54,977
  • Male – 62,32,70,258
  • Female – 58,75,84,719
  • Density – 382 per sq km
  • Adult sex ratio – 943 (females per 1000 males)
  • Child sex ratio – 919 (girl per 1000 boys)

  • State with highest literacy – Kerala (94.0%)
  • State with lowest literacy – Bihar (61.8%)
  • State having highest population – Uttar Pradesh (19.98 crore)
  • State having lowest population – Sikkim (6.10 lakh)
  • State with highest population density – Bihar (1,106)
  • State with lowest population density – Arunachal pradesh (17)
  • State having highest sex ratio –  Kerala (1084)
  • State having lowest sex ratio – Haryana (879)
  • India have 2.4% of the world surface area of 135.79 million sq km.
  • India supports 17.5 % of the world population.
  • Highest scheduled caste population is in Uttar Pradesh.
  • Highest scheduled tribe population is in Madhya Pradesh.
  • The national population stablisation fund was renamed as Jansankhya sthirikaran kosh in june 2003.
