Arab states demand Qatar closes Al Jazeera, cuts back ties to Iran

·         Four Arab states boycotting Qatar over alleged support for terrorism have sent Doha a list of 13 demands including closing Al Jazeera television and reducing ties to their regional adversary Iran, an official of one of the four countries said.
·         The demands aimed at ending the worst Gulf Arab crisis in years appear designed to quash a two decade-old foreign policy in which Qatar has punched well above its weight, striding the stage as a peace broker, often in conflicts in Muslim lands.
·         Doha's independent-minded approach, including a dovish line on Iran and support for Islamist groups, in particular the Muslim Brotherhood, has incensed some of its neighbours who see political Islamism as a threat to their dynastic rule.
·         The list, compiled by Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Egypt and Bahrain, which cut economic, diplomatic and travel ties to Doha on June 5, also demands the closing of a Turkish military base in Qatar, the official told Reuters.

·         Seven police officers were killed in the first attack, in Quetta, which happened when police stopped the car to search it at a checkpoint.
·         Abdul Razzaq Cheema, director general of police in Balochistan province, of which Quetta is capital, told Reuters the bomber had detonated a car packed with explosives.
·         At least 13 bodies were taken to hospital, along with 19 wounded people, said Wasim Baig, a spokesman for the Civil Hospital in Quetta. Nine security officials were among the wounded, said Fareed Sumalan, a doctor at the hospital.

Panel to oversee progress in UN’s SDG

·         The Centre will soon set up a high-level committee headed by Chief Statistician of India to oversee the country's progress towards UN’s Sustainable Development Goals aimed at ending poverty, fighting inequalities and tackling climate change.
·         A dashboard is also being developed with technical support from the UN Development Programme (UNDP) to “strengthen the mechanism” for monitoring progress on these global goals, India said in its Voluntary National Review Report submitted to the UN Forum on Sustainable Development.
·         Data collected by private agencies may be considered for monitoring the SDGs, particularly since a number of the goals are not directly linked to the Centre’s provision of public services.
·         The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation has already developed a list of draft national indicators to measure progress of SDGs. These draft indicators have been put out in public domain. Based on the inputs received, national-level indicators will be finalised.

·         The annual report by the U.N. Office on Drugs and Crime released also says the United States accounts for about 25% of drug-related deaths annually. It says death rates there continue to rise, reaching more than 52,000 in 2015.
·         The world’s population is estimated at over seven billion people.
·         The new report says that of the almost 12 million people worldwide injecting drugs, 1.6 million are living with HIV and 6.1 million with hepatitis C.

India’s fertility rate more than halves over 40 years

·         In seven years Indians will cross the 1.44 billion mark and the nation will go on to have a bigger population than China, according to a U.N. report.
·         The World Population Prospects: The 2017 Revision report released on June 21, 2017 recorded two other dramatic facts: The fertility rate of Indians has more than halved over the last 40 years to 2.3 and Indians have added almost a decade to their life expectancy in the past 25 year which is now nearly 69 years.
·         “In roughly seven years, the population of India is expected to surpass that of China,” the report said, calling it a notable finding. “In 2024, both countries are expected to have roughly 1.44 billion,” which will be an increase from 1.34 billion people in India now and 1.41 in China, the report said. “Thereafter, India’s population is projected to continue growing for several decades to around 1.5 billion in 2030, and approaching 1.66 billion in 2050, while the population of China is expected to remain stable until the 2030s, after which it will begin a slow decline.”
·         The total fertility rate for India, measured as the number of children born to a woman, has fallen from 4.97 during 1975-80 to 2.3 for the current period of 2015-20. By 2025-30 it was expected to go down to 2.1 and slide to 1.86 during 2045-50 and 1.78 during 2095-2100, the report projected. A fertility rate of about 2.2 is generally considered the replacement level, the rate at which the population would hold steady, and when the rate dips below this number, the population would decline.
·         During 1990-1995 life expectancy for Indians was 59.2 years and during the current period of 2015-20, it has reached 68.9 years.
·         The current world population of 7.6 billion is projected to hit 8.6 billion by 2030, 9.8 billion in 2050 and 11.2 billion at the turn of the century.
