India, Pakistan admitted to SCO as full members
·        India became a full member of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO).
·         India’s membership at the SCO was announced by the President of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbayev, who also welcomed Pakistan as a new member into the organisation.
·        India and Pakistan were admitted as observers in 2005 and began the administrative process of joining the organisation, which began in 2001 in Shanghai, in 2015.
President of India launches mobile app ‘Selfie with Daughter’

·        The President of India, Shri Pranab Mukherjee launched a mobile Application ‘Selfie with Daughter’ at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
·        The ‘Selfie with Daughter’ campaign was started by Shri Sunil Jaglan in June 2015 in village Bibipur, Jind, Haryana. A former Sarpanch, Shri Jaglan has been working in the field of women empowerment and village development. The aim of the campaign is to motivate society to feel proud to be parents of a girl child which will result in improving the child sex ratio.
Second edition of National Health Editors’ Conference on Yoga held in New Delhi
·        The second edition of National Health Editors’ Conference on Yoga was inaugurated by Minister of State for AYUSH (Independent Charge), Shri Shripad Yesso Naik at National Media Centre in New Delhi.
·         The conference was organized by Ministry of AYUSH in association with the Press Information Bureau (PIB), M/o Information & Broadcasting; and Central Council for Research in Yoga and Naturopathy (M/o AYUSH) as a part of celebrations of the 3rd International Day of Yoga on 21st June, 2017. The theme of this year’s conference was “Yoga for Health and Harmony”.
New Projects Inaugurated at Kamarajar Port in Tamil Nadu
·        The Union Minister of Shipping, Road Transport & Highways Shri Nitin Gadkari has said that an investment of Rs 2 lakh 50000 crore is being made in Tamil Nadu under Sagarmala. Of this Rs.39, 000 crore will be for port modernization, Rs.55, 000 crore for port connectivity and Rs.1,50,000 crore for port led industrialization.
·        The projects include a New Container Terminal worth Rs.1270 crore, a new multi cargo terminal worth Rs.151 crores, Railway line to Container and Multi cargo terminal worth Rs. 60 crore, and RFID system worth Rs.11.82 crore. Shri Gadkari said the work being done under Sagarmala is estimated to create about 2 lakh direct jobs in the state in the next two years.
Sagarmala a Game Changer in Country’s growth: First Workshop Held in Capital
·        The Ministry of Shipping organized a workshop on its flagship programme titled, “Accelerating Sagarmala Implementation – Engaging with States” in New Delhi.
·         The main objective of the workshop was to enhance the engagement among Ministry of Shipping, other line ministries and various maritime states of India for Sagarmala Programme.

·        New Austrian law came into force that will ban the full-face Islamic veil in public places from October 1. People who break the law could be fined up to €150.
Two Sikh MPs win on Labour ticket in Britain
·        Two Sikh MPs won seats for the Labour Party in election.
·        Tanmanjeet Singh Dhesi, who is the first turban-wearing Sikh to enter Parliament, won Slough, increasing Labour’s share of the votes by 14.4%.
·        Preet Kaur Gill won from Birmingham Edbaston to become the first Sikh woman MP. Twelve Indian origin candidates were elected this time.
·        Among the incumbents are Labour’s Seema Malhotra and Virendra Sharma and the Conservatives Rishi Sunak, who represents the Yorkshire constituency of Richmond and is the son-in-law of Infosys, founder Narayan Murthy.

New Google project digitises world’s top fashion archives

·        Textile collections from museums and cultural institutions of India, along with at least three unique Indian weaving traditions — Baluchari, Patola and brocades — have featured in Google’s virtual exhibition project titled “We Wear Culture” .
·        Kolkata’s Indian Museum, the country’s oldest museum with its rare collection of saris, shawls, skirts and kurtas from (1701 to 1991) has featured prominently in the exhibition under the section ‘textile traditions of India’.
GST Council constitutes 18 Sectoral Groups for smooth roll-out of GST
·        18 Sectoral Groups have been constituted representing various sectors of the economy in order to ensure smooth roll-out of GST.
·        These 18 Sectoral Groups representing various sectors of the economy and containing Senior Officers of the Centre and the States are being set-up to ensure smooth implementation of GST by timely responding to the issues and problems of their respective Sector(s).

Unclaimed PF to fund medical costs

·        Savings remaining unclaimed in dormant Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) accounts for seven years will be used to fund a new scheme for providing medical benefits to pensioners under the EPF scheme, according to Labour Ministry sources.
·        The move comes after a committee of secretaries, headed by Cabinet Secretary P.K. Sinha, recently directed the Labour Ministry to frame a scheme, for the benefit of senior citizens who are PF subscribers, from inoperative account funds.

Centre to chart digital roadmap


  •         The Ministry of Electronics and IT has convened a roundtable of senior industry representatives, including those from the software services and mobile wallet firms, to develop a roadmap for making India a $1 trillion digital economy.
  •        The roundtable will take place on June 16 in New Delhi and will be chaired by the Minister of Electronics and IT Ravi Shankar Prasad.

Coal India to shut 37 mines

  •         Coal India Ltd. (CIL) is planning to close 37 mines in FY18, the PSU said, even as trade unions are getting together to oppose the move.
  •       “An action plan has been prepared by subsidiaries in which 37 unviable underground mines have been envisaged to be closed in 2017-18,” CIL said in a regulatory filing. It said that the identified surplus manpower from these mines would be redeployed in nearby mines.

NITI Aayog to choose 3 states for health sector makeover

  •         Government think-tank NITI Aayog will pick three states out of the 16 that made a presentation to the Aayog for development support to transform their health sector.
  •         NITI Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant chaired the meeting convened to help states give their health sector a makeover over the next 3 years.

NASA unveils 'out of this world' Mars rover


  •        NASA has unveiled an "out of this world" futuristic Mars rover concept vehicle to inspire young people to want to learn more about its plans to send humans to the Red Planet in the 2030s.
  •        While this exact rover is not expected to operate on Mars, one or more of its elements could make its way into a rover that astronauts will drive on the Red Planet.
Ingredients of life found around stars 400 light-years away

  • ·        Scientists have discovered traces of building blocks of life around a young star system located 400 light-years away, a finding that may help understand how living beings evolved on Earth.
  • ·        This is the first ever detection of this prebiotic molecule towards solar-type protostars, the sort from which our solar system evolved.
  •           Astronomers harnessed the power of the Atacama Large Millimetre/submillimetre Array (ALMA) in Chile to detect the prebiotic complex organic molecule methyl isocyanate in the multiple star system IRAS 16293-2422.
