National:

Assam government launches Northeast first digital archive

·        Assam government launched the first digital archive of the Northeast at Jyoti Chitraban Film Studio in Guwahati to preserve films, music, special events, photographs and texts.
·        Jyoti Chitraban hall of fame will induct several renowned luminaries of Assam like Sangeet Acharyya, Lakshmi Ram Barua, filmmaker and lyricist Jyoti Prasad Agarwala, poet-lyricist Parbati Prasad Baruva, Kalaguru Bishnu Prasad Rava and music legend Bhupen Hazarika.
Shri Rajnath Singh inaugurates National Level Conference on "Capacity Building of SDRFs-2017”
·        The Union Home Minister Shri Rajnath Singh inaugurated the 2-day National Level Conference on “Capacity Building of SDRFs-2017”.
·         The conference is being organised by National Disaster Response Force (NDRF). The conference aims to develop synergies between the responses of National & State Disaster Response Forces (SDRFs) and to highlight way ahead to strengthen the response capabilities of SDRFs.
INSV TARINI Maiden Visit to Mauritius
·        Indian Naval Sailing Vessel Tarini entered Port Louis harbour, Mauritius on her maiden visit to the island nation since induction in the Indian Navy in Feb 17. Tarini is the sister Vessel of Indian Navy's first sailing Vessel INSV Mhadei that has numerous accomplishments to her name. INSV Tarini is 55 feet in length and built in India in line with the ‘Make in India’ initiative of the Indian Navy, fructified by M/s Aquarius Shipyard, Goa.
Shri J P Nadda launches ‘Skill for Life, Save a Life’ initiative to promote skill development in the health sector
·        Shri J P Nadda, Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare launched the ‘Skill for Life, Save a Life’ initiative at a function.
·        India enjoys a demographic dividend as more than 65% youth are below the age of 35 years and the Government is determined to seize this opportunity by providing adequate skills and employability to the youth for a strong foundation for continued and sustainable growth.
·        ‘Skills for Life, Save a Life’ Initiative’ aims to upscale the quantity and quality of trained professionals in the healthcare system.
·        Under this initiative various courses are planned to be initiated targeting specific competencies for healthcare professionals as well as for general public.
National Trust under M/O Social Justice & Empowerment launches ‘Inclusive India Initiative’
·        The National Trust under Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment in collaboration with key partners organised the conference “Inclusive India Initiative: Towards an Inclusive India” for intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDDs). 
·         The ‘Inclusive India Initiative’ of National Trust is specifically catering to persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities; with an objective to include these people in the mainstream and in all important aspects of social life, namely education, employment and community ‘Inclusive India’ in about changing the attitudes.

Sher Bahadur Deuba elected Nepal PM

·        Sher Bahadur Deuba, a veteran politician known for his close ties with India, was overwhelmingly elected the Prime Minister of Nepal for the fourth time, taking over the reigns of the country at a time the Himalayan nation is navigating through a political turmoil.
Business & Economy:

CCI clears Airtel-Telenor merger

·        The Competition Commission of India (CCI) approved the proposed merger of Telenor (India) Communications with the firm.
·        “(The) CCI vide its letter dated June 05, 2017 has approved the proposed merger of Telenor (India) Communications Pvt. Ltd., with Bharti Airtel Ltd,”.

Centre notifies rules on capital gains tax

·        The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has come out with a final notification specifying the securities transactions that would attract capital gains tax where the securities transaction tax (STT) hasn’t been paid.

·        An amendment has been made in the Finance Act 2017 to curb the declaration of unaccounted income as exempt long-term capital gains under the previous provisions of the Income Tax Act by entering into fake transactions. The amendment notification specifies the transactions on which the tax would apply and and those on which tax would be exempt.

Japan’s NEC to invest $10 million in 3 years

·        Japanese technology giant NEC, which announced a new Centre of Excellence in India, will be investing $10 million over the next three years in the country, while targeting revenues of $100 million during the same period.

·        The Centre of Excellence in Noida will work on building Big Data and analytics solutions for clients across sectors such as banking and financial services (BFS), telecom, retail and the Government.

Aadhar Housing, DHFL merger by Aug.

·        The merger of Aadhar Housing Finance, a company focused on the economically weaker sections and lower income group segment, with DHFL Vysya, is expected to be completed this August.
·        The approval of the National Housing Bank was received in April, 2017 while the National Company Law Tribunal nod was being awaited.

Banks to start charging for P2P payments on UPI

·        Nearly two years after operationalisation of the Unified Payment Interface (UPI), banks have started moving to charge for peer-to-peer payments on the new platform.
·        The country's largest lender State Bank of India has come out with charges with effect from June 1, while the second largest private sector lender HDFC Bank has also gone public with its rate structure which will be effective July 10.

Adani gives final approval for $4 billion Australia coal mine project

·        Billionaire-Gautam Adani led Adani Enterprises  announced its plans to go ahead with the troubled $ 16.5 billion Carmichael coal mine project in Australia which has been surrounded by controversies and faced several roadblocks over potential damage it could cause to the Great Barrier Reef.

NRIs to adopt 500 villages in India

·        Non-resident Indians (NRIs) living in the US will adopt 500 villages in India as part of their effort to develop the rural areas of the county.
·        A formal announcement in this regard would be made during the Big Ideas for Better India conference in Silicon Valley on July 1.

Battery-less pacemaker developed

·        Scientists have developed a new wireless, battery-less pacemaker that can be implanted directly into a patient’s heart, an advance that could lead to “triple crown” of treatment for irregular heartbeat.
·        The pacemaker harvests energy wirelessly from radio frequency radiation transmitted by an external battery pack, researchers at Rice University in the U.S. said. The chip at the system’s heart is less than 4 mm wide and incorporates the receiving antenna, a current rectifier, a power management unit and a pacing activation signal.
Child-friendly HIV drug gets govt. nod
·        The Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) has registered the child-friendly HIV drug in oral pellet form, ending months of uncertainty for the HIV community. This has opened up crucial supplies from Cipla Pharmaceuticals, a market leader in the HIV segment, to the National AIDS Control Programme (NACO), which had been struggling to source quality assured paediatric formulations of the drug.
·        India ran out of Lopinavir syrup, a child-friendly HIV drug, in March after Cipla — the sole manufacturer of the drug — stopped production consequent to non-payment by the Health Ministry.
·        The drug’s adult version has to be swallowed whole and thus cannot be administered to infants and young children.

‘Hottest’ planet in universe discovered

·        Scientists have discovered the hottest known planet located 650 light years from Earth, which is warmer than most stars in the universe and sports a giant, glowing gas tail like a comet.
·        The Jupiter-like planet orbits a massive star KELT-9 every day and a half, researchers said.
·        With a day-side temperature peaking at 4,326 degree Celsius, the newly discovered exoplanet, designated KELT-9b, is hotter than most stars and only 926 degree Celsius cooler than our Sun.

Arundhati Roy’s new novel goes on sale

·        Arundhati Roy’s eagerly-awaited second novel went on sale , two decades after her prize-winning debut The God of Small Things propelled her to global fame and launched her career as an outspoken critic of injustice in the country.
·        Ms. Roy became the first Indian woman to win the Booker Prize with her 1997 work, which sold around eight million copies and turned the young author into a star of the literary world.
·        Her latest novel The Ministry of Utmost Happiness, which she has said had took 10 years to produce.
