Modi arrives in Hamburg for G20 summit


·         Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in the German city Hamburg to attend the G20 Summit, after wrapping up his historic three-day visit to Israel.
·         He will attend the summit hosted by Germany on July 7 to 8. The theme of the summit this year is ‘Shaping an Inter-connected World’
·         On the sidelines of the summit, Mr. Modi is to participate in a meeting of leaders of the BRICS — Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa — grouping. He is also set to hold bilateral meetings with some of the world leaders there.
·         The G20, founded in 1999, comprises a mix of the world’s largest and emerging economies, representing about two—thirds of the world’s population, 85 per cent of global gross domestic product and over 75 % of global trade.
·         The members are Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, the UK, the US, and the European Union.
Shri Achal Kumar Joti takes over as new Chief Election Commissioner of India
·         Shri Achal Kumar Joti has assumed charge as the 21st Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) of India, succeeding DrNasim Zaidi DrZaidi demitted office after completing his tenure on 6th July 2017.
  • Shri Joti has served as Election Commissioner since 13th May, 2015.
  • Before joining the Election Commission of India, Shri Joti has served the Nation as a longtime Civil Servant of Indian Administrative Service (1975 Batch). He brings with him a rich experience of Public Administration of 42 years.
“JIGYASA” - Student-Scientist connect programme launched
  • Jigyasa, a student- scientist connect programme was officially launched in the national capital. Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), has joined hands with Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS) to implement this programme. The focus is on connecting school students and scientists so as to extend student’s classroom learning with that of a very well planned research laboratory based learning.
  • The “JIGYASA” would inculcate the culture of inquisitiveness on one hand and scientific temper on the other, amongst the school students and their teachers. The Programme is expected to connect 1151 Kendriya Vidyalayas with 38 National Laboratories of CSIR targeting 100,000 students and nearly 1000 teachers annually.
  • “JIGYASA” is one of the major initiative taken up by CSIR at national level, during its Platinum Jubilee Celebration Year.  CSIR is widening and deepening its Scientific Social Responsibility further with the programme.
TERI ranked among world’s top think tanks
·         An international body which focuses on climate policies has ranked The Energy Resources Institute (TERI) among the top think tanks in the world.
·         TERI was ranked number two by the International Center for Climate Governance (ICCG), an internationally-renowned body whose activities focus on the design of climate policy and related governance issues.
·         The New Delhi-based think tank was ranked under the category 2016 Top Climate Think Tanks in the Rest of the World--Absolute Global Rankings during ICCGs 23rd annual conference of the European Association of Environmental and Resource Economists (EAERE) in Athens in Greece, a TERI statement said.
·         TERI conducts research for sustainable development of India.
Shri Sanjay Kumar takes charge as DG, NDRF
  • Shri Sanjay Kumar, 1985-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, Himachal Pradesh Cadre, took charge as the Director General (DG) of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).
  • The post of DG, NDRF fell vacant after incumbent Shri R K Pachnanda was appointed as the Director General of Indo-Tibetan Border Police.
  • Prior to the appointment as DG, NDRF, Shri Sanjay Kumar was serving as Director General of Police in Himachal Pradesh.
Jobs secured with fake caste claim invalid: SC
·         Persons who secured government employment and got academic admissions under reserved categories with the help of forged caste certificates can have their jobs and admission declared invalid, the Supreme Court held.
·         A Bench of Chief Justice J.S. Khehar and Justice D.Y. Chandrachud disagreed with a Bombay High Court decision in 2014 that public servants who got their jobs using fake caste certificates and have spent considerable time in service can be afforded protection. The High Court had said that such persons could be allowed to keep their jobs.
·         The verdict came on a batch of petitions, including the one filed by the Maharashtra government against the Bombay High Court’s December 2014 judgment.
Centre’s new plan to turn Varanasi green
  • The Centre is set to implement a new plan to reduce the carbon footprint of Varanasi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's constituency. On the anvil are solar power generation plants and green energy initiatives to reduce the holy city’s dependence on fossil fuel.
With J&K on board, country integrated economically: Arun Jaitley
  • Finance minister Arun Jaitley has said with the passage of Goods and Service Tax legislation by the Jammu & Kashmir, the country, which was politically integrated, had now integrated economically. He said the first move towards the game changing tax reform was made by the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government 17 years back, and not the Congress.
  • “...in the last 70 years, this is the first time that the country had become economically integrated,” he said at a felicitation function organisation by Delhi BJP. Jammu and Kashmir was the only state that had not approved a legislation to implement the GST even after the new indirect tax regime was rolled out on July 1.

Global Forgiveness Day: 7 July 2017



  • Global Forgiveness Day is observed on July 07, 2017. 
  • It is a day to forgive, and a day to be forgiven! It was created in 1994 by the Christian Embassy of Christ's Ambassadors. 
  • The date has been moved from August 27th to August 7th. 
  • Studies show that people who forgive are happier and healthier than those who hold resentments. 
  • Forgiveness is the renunciation or cessation of resentment, indignation or anger as a result of a perceived offence, disagreement, or mistake, or ceasing to demand punishment or restitution.




Beijing Declaration on Education



·       BRICS ministers of education and assigned representatives adopted 'Beijing Declaration on Education' in a meeting at Beijing. Ministers from BRICS countries discussed education reforms, approaches to promoting equity in education and fostering quality education, strengthening BRICS collaboration in the field of education, and exchange of students and scholars and teaching faculty among BRICS Member States in the meeting held on July 5 and July 6.
·       According to the declaration, members states - Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa - are committed to the UN Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG4)-Education 2030 which aims to "Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote life-long learning opportunities for all" that was set within The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
·       For ensuring coordinated and deeper cooperation among the member states, the meeting reiterated support for the BRICS Network University (NU) to collaborate in the fields of education, research and innovation. It also encouraged universities to participate in the BRICS University League.
France will 'ban all petrol and diesel vehicles by 2040'
·         France plans to ban all petrol and diesel vehicles by 2040, the country's new environment minister has announced.
·         Nicolas Hulot made the announcement as he unveiled a series of measures as part of newly elected President Emmanuel Macron's plan to make the country carbon neutral by 2050. 
·         As part of the plan, poorer households will receive a premium so they can swap their polluting vehicles for clean alternatives.
·         The announcement comes after Volvo said it planned to built only electric and hybrid vehicles from 2019.  
·         Speaking at a press conference, Mr Hulot told reporters France would stop using coal to produce electricity by 2022 and that up to €4bn of investments will help to boost energy efficiency.

’India likely to clock GDP growth of 6.9 % this fiscal’
·         Indian economy is expected to recover in the coming quarters and the country is expected to clock a real GDP growth of 6.9 % in this financial year, says a report.
·         A report by BMI Research has said that India’s growth is expected to pick up following the negative ramifications from the demonetisation drive in November 2016, but weak public banks will likely cap the recovery.
·         Real GDP growth slowed substantially to 6.1 % year-on-year in the fourth quarter of 2016—17.
·         “We expect the economy to continue to recover over the coming quarters. We are forecasting real GDP growth to come in at 6.9 % in 2017—18,” the report said.
Garib Nawaz Skill Development Centres to be established in 100 districts of the country: Shri Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi
  • The Minister of State for Minority Affairs (Independent Charge) & Parliamentary Affairs, Shri Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said that Garib Nawaz Skill Development Centres will be established in 100 districts of the country which will effectively ensure employment oriented skill development of youth belonging to Minority communities.
IDFC, Shriram groups in talks to combine businesses in mega union
  • IDFC and Shriram groups are in talks to combine all or some of their businesses in a mega union that could straddle traditional banking, consumer lending and truck financing, apart from providing billionaire Ajay Piramal an entry into a highly regulated industry.
  • Once the merger of Shriram Capital with IDFC Bank is completed, the two Shriram group companies could then combine with IDFC Bank to form a financial services giant, said one of the people cited above.
  • Such an entity could have a combined market cap of Rs 62,000 crore based on 5th July stock prices and would be counted among the country’s top financial services firms.
GST biggest business and economic reform of India: PM Narendra Modi
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi asserted that GST was by far the biggest business and economic reform of India and that the country was moving towards the modern tax regime, which was transparent, stable and predictable.
  • “We have resolved a number of regulatory and policy issues facing businesses and companies. We have worked very sincerely for ease of doing business. We are positioning India as a global manufacturing hub. This is necessary for us to take advantage of youth energy. For this, we have launched Make in India,” Modi said while addressing the first joint meeting of Indo-Israel CEOs forum. Kjmn

India declares itself free from Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (H5N1 and H5N8)



  • India had reported outbreaks of Highly Pathogenic Avian influenza at various epicenters in Delhi, Gwalior (MP), Rajpura (Punjab), Hissar (Haryana), Bellary (Karnataka), Allappuzha and Kottayam (Kerala), Ahmedabad (Gujarat), Daman (Daman) and Khordha and Angul (Odisha during October, 2016 to February, 2017.
  • All the outbreaks of Avian Influenza (HPAI) mentioned above were notified to OIE and the control and containment operations were carried out as per the Action Plan on Preparedness, Control and Containment of Avian Influenza. 
  • Surveillance was carried out throughout the country and around the areas of the outbreaks since completion of the operation (including culling, disinfection and clean-up) and surveillance in the states showed no evidence of presence of Avian Influenza Virus.
  • In view of the above, India has declared itself free from Avian Influenza (H5N8 and H5N1) from 6th June, 2017 and notified the same to OIE.
‘White tiger’ spotted in the Nilgiris
·         A rare ‘white tiger’ with a pale skin color has been spotted for the first time in the Nilgiris by a wildlife photographer, arousing interest among conservationists and forest officials on whether it is a true genetic mutant.
·         Photographer Nilanjan Ray from Bengaluru spotted the cat at an undisclosed location on a recent trip to the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. A keen wildlife photographer who has covered several national parks, he said the tiger did not seem to be an albino, and was whitish with golden brown patches.

Manpreet Kaur, Govindan Laxmanan win gold in Asian Athletics Championships

·         Manpreet Kaur clinched the first gold medal in the Asian Athletics Championships as she clinched the women’s shot put event while Govindan Laxmanan won gold in the 5000 metres.

·         Manpreet, who won gold with a throw of 18.28 metres, will now focus on the IAAF World Championships in London next month.

  • Govindan Laxmanan clinched the first gold for India at the Asian Athletics Championships by emerging triumphant in the men's 5,000 metres at the Kalinga Stadium.
India 96th in FIFA World ranking, its best in 21 years
·         India has moved four places up to the 96th position in the FIFA World ranking released. This is the country’s second best ranking — its previous best was the 94th position in February 1996.
·         India, which had been ranked 100th in the previous list released on June 1, has won two matches since the last list was published. This is also a huge confidence boost for the current squad which has moved 77 positions up from the 173rd rank on March 2015.
Virat Kohli surpasses Tendulkar for most tons while chasing
  • India skipper Virat Kohli has broken Sachin Tendulkar's record for most centuries in One-day Internationals while chasing.
  • Kohli led from the front with a fluent century as India wrapped up the five-match series 3-1 with a convincing eight-wicket win over the West Indies.
  • This was Kohli's 28th hundred in One-day cricket, 18 of which have come while chasing. 
  • Tendulkar took 232 innings to reach 17, while Kohli has reached the milestone in only 102 innings.
