List of Important Civilian Awards – An Introduction
“If cricket is a religion, Sachin Tendulkar is the god of cricket”. This is a very popular phrase that most media persons used to describe the craze of cricket in India and the love for Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar. Seeing Sachin’s contribution to the game of cricket and the laurels he brought for the country, the government of India decided to confer the highest civilian award to Sachin Tendulkar – the Bharat Ratna.
Civilian awards are given for the exemplary work done by individuals in their respective fields. Here are the four civilian awards that the government awards to citizens of India:

#1. Bharat Ratna – Important Civilian Awards
This award is the highest civilian award of India and is conferred for achievements in the fields of:
- Science
- Literature
- Arts
- Public services
- Sports

#2. Padma Vibhushan – Important Civilian Awards
- This is the second highest civilian award after the Bharat Ratna.
- The Padma Vibhushan is given for exceptional and distinguished service in any field including service rendered by the government servants.
- A few eminent personalities who received this award are Zakhir Hussain, V K Menon, Sachin Tendulkar, Shri Sharad Pawar and more.
#3. Padma Bhushan – Important Civilian Awards
- The Padma Bhushan is the third highest civilian award of India.
- Like the Padma Vibhushan, the Padma Bhushan is also conferred upon individuals for distinguished service of a high order.
- A few well-known people who have received this award are Vishwa Mohan Bhatt, Devi Prasad Dwivedi, Swami Niranjana Nanda Saraswat and several others.
#4. Padma Shri – Important Civilian Awards
- The Padma Shri is the fourth highest honour after the Bharat Ratna civilian award.
- Some eminent personalities that have been offered this award are Kailash Kher, Anuradha Paudwal, Sanjeev Kapoor, Virat Kohli and several others.
The aforementioned awards are presented by the President of India usually in the month of March or April. Every year, the Padma Awards committee is constituted by the Prime Minister of India. The Padma Awards are announced on 26th January every year. In the year 2016, the President approved the conferment of Padma Awards to 112 distinguished Indians.
