Panel to study free movement along Myanmar border
·         The Union Home Ministry has constituted another committee to examine methods to curb the misuse of free movement along the Myanmar border, indicating a significant shift in India’s policy towards Myanmar, a friendly country, with which it shares unfenced borders and unhindered movement of people across the border.
·         Home Minister Rajnath Singh, who is on a two-day visit to Mizoram, said a committee headed by Rina Mitra, Special Secretary-Internal Security, was being constituted to “examine the present rules and regulations adopted by the border States for implementation of free movement regime.”

·         The Congress released a commemorative edition of the newspaper National Herald in Bengaluru as part of its relaunch.
·         Vice-President Hamid Ansari and Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi were present at the event at Ambedkar Bhavan where “India at Crossroads: 70 years of Independence” was released.
INS Sahyadri on Overseas Deployment to Papua New Guinea
·         In pursuance of India’s Act East policy, Indian Naval Ship Sahyadri  is on an overseas deployment to the South East Asia and Southern Indian Ocean. The ship arrived in Moresby in Papua New Guinea., from 12 June to 15 June 2017.
·       The visit of the Indian Naval Ships seeks to underscore India’s peaceful presence and solidarity with friendly and harmonious countries towards ensuring good order in the maritime domain and to strengthen existing bonds between Papua New Guinea and India.  
·         Indian Naval assets have been increasingly deployed in recent times to address the main maritime concerns of the region.
·          In addition, as part of the Indian Government’s vision of SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region), the Indian Navy has also been involved in assisting countries in the Indian Ocean Region with EEZ Surveillance, Search and Rescue, and other capacity-building and capability- enhancement activities.

Panama Papers probe: JIT summons Nawaz Sharif

·         Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has been summoned by investigators probing the assets of the premier's family disclosed in Panama Papers, a Prime Minister House official confirmed.
·         In recent weeks, Mr. Sharif's two sons Hussain Nawaz and Hassan Nawaz have been grilled for hours by the Joint Investigation Team comprising financial experts and representatives of intelligence agencies.
·         The investigators have been ordered to probe the Prime Minister and his family whether they bought expensive flats in London through an off-shore account. Last year, Panama Papers revealed that the families who have hidden money from their authorities have purchased assets outside their countries.

Another US appeals court upholds decision blocking Trump’s travel ban

·         Another US appeals court upheld a decision blocking President Donald Trump’s revised travel ban, dealing the administration another legal defeat as the Supreme Court considers a separate case on the issue.
·         The ruling from a unanimous three-judge panel of the 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals said the president violated US immigration law by discriminating against people based on their nationality and by failing to demonstrate that their entry into the country would hurt American interests.
·         “Immigration, even for the president, is not a one-person show,” the judges said. “The president’s authority is subject to certain statutory and constitutional restraints.”

·         Donald Trump’s order barred travellers from Libya, Iran, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen for 90 days while the government put in place stricter visa screening.


Norway to ban full-face veil in nurseries, schools and universities

·         The Norwegian government proposed a ban on full-face veils in schools, universities and kindergartens.
·         Oslo’s move follows in the footsteps of other European countries such as France, Belgium and the Netherlands, which also imposed restrictions on wearing burqas and niqabs.
·         If the law passes, Norway would be the first Nordic country to introduce a ban on burqas for both adults and children.
World Day Against Child Labour 2017

India consumer inflation eases to lowest since 2012 in May
  • The Central Statistics Office (CSO), Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation has revised the Base Year of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) from 2010=100 to 2012=100 with effect from the release of indices for the month of January 2015.
·         Due to a drop in food prices, India’s annual consumer price inflation had eased further to 2.18 per cent in the month of May, from 2.99 percent in April, according to data released by the government.
·         This number is the lowest inflation rate that the country has witnessed ever since it started publishing an economy-wide consumer price index in the year 2012.
·         Retail food prices fell 1.05 percent in May from last year. Comparatively, it was 0.61 percent gain in April.
·         The overall food inflation was in negative territory at minus 1.05 percent during the month. Prices of vegetables declined by 13.44 per cent and that of pulses and products by 19.45 per cent.
·         As retail inflation dropped to an all-time low of 2.18 percent in May.
·         Meanwhile, industrial production growth declined to 3.1 percent in April due to poor show by manufacturing, mining and power sectors added with a lower offtake of capital goods and consumer durables.

Organisers unveil official mascot of Asian Athletics Championship

·         Olly, the Olive Ridley sea turtle was unveiled as the official mascot for the 22nd edition of the Asian Athletics Championships to be held in Bhubaneshwar from July 6 to 9.
·         Chief Minister of Odisha Naveen Patnaik flagged off the Asian Athletics Championships’ mascot rally which will tour all the 30 districts of the state to spread awareness and publicity for the event.
·         The mascot has been chosen with the aim of generating awareness amongst the masses and creating a sense of belongingness to the Championships for which Olly will be touring all the 30 districts of the state.
·         This 22nd edition is set to be its biggest ever as it has garnered participation from nearly 1000 athletes which will be a qualifying event for the IAAF World Championships in London.
·         This is the third time the Asian Athletics Championships are being held in India, after New Delhi (1989) and Pune (2013).
·         Speaking on the occasion, Odisha Chief Minister Patnaik said: “The 22nd Asian Athletics Championships will be the largest ever sporting event in Bhubaneshwar with participation of 45 countries.
·         Bhubaneshwar has emerged as a sought-after destination for international sports competitions, as it will also host the Hockey World League Final in December 2017 and the prestigious men’s Hockey World Cup in December 2018.”

Jamshedpur and Bengaluru new additions to ISL

·         Football Sports Development Limited (FSDL) announced the addition of two new clubs, owned by Tata Steel Limited and Jindal South West (JSW) Group, respectively, to the Indian Super League.
·         The inclusion of the two new clubs came through the ‘Invitation To Bid’ tender process floated by FSDL last month.
·         Tata Steel, which won the bid to participate from Jamshedpur, has been promoting football since 1987 through the Tata Football Academy.
·         JSW Group, owner of two-time I-League champion team Bengaluru FC, won the right to participate from Bengaluru.

Nandini sets new steeplechase mark

  • Nandini Gupta of Uttar Pradesh set a National junior record in girls 3000m steeplechase with a time of 10 minutes 53.91 seconds in the Junior Federation Cup athletics championships at the PAC Stadium.
  • The 20-year-old beat the mark of 11:04.80 set by Parul Chaudhary at Vijayawada in November 2014.
