CSIR inks deal with Ethiopian institute
·        The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) has signed a $7 million (Rs. 45 crore approx.) agreement with the Metal Industries Development Institute (MIDI), Ethiopia.
·        According to CSIR sources, this is the largest, international deal it has ever signed.
India to be Co-Partner Country in ANUGA 2017


·        Minister of Food Processing Industries Smt Harsimrat Kaur Badal addressed a Joint Press Conference with the organizers of ANUGA - an international business platform for Food Industry to be held in Cologne, Germany.
·         She also signed the Memorandum of Understanding for Participation in the ANUGA Exhibition.
·        Minister of Food Processing Industries said that it was an honour for India to be a co-partner country in such a prestigious international event.

Eastern Fleet Ships enter Freemantle to participate in AUSINDEX-17, a bilateral maritime exercise with Australian Navy
·        In pursuance of India’s ‘Act East’ policy, Eastern Fleet under the command of Rear Admiral Biswajit Dasgupta, YSM, VSM, the Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Fleet are on an overseas deployment to the South East Asia and Southern Indian Ocean. Indian Naval Ships Jyoti, Shivalik and Kamorta are on a port visit to Freemantle, Australia.
·         The visit of the Indian Naval Ships seeks to underscore India’s peaceful presence and solidarity with friendly and harmonious countries towards ensuring good order in the maritime domain and to strengthen existing bonds between India and Australia. The two countries share a rich history and a strategic relationship. A number of bilateral agreements exist between the two countries in a various spheres.

Successful Flight Test of ATGM Nag
·        The Anti-Tank Guided Missile Nag was successfully flight tested in the desert ranges of Rajasthan.
·        The Fire and Forget 3rd generation ATGM Nag is incorporated with many advanced technologies including the Imaging Infrared Radar (IIR) Seeker with integrated avionics, a capability which is possessed by few nations in the world.

Myanmar city seeks heritage status
·        Myanmar is striving to enlist Bagan, a famous ancient city with thousands of religious edifices and pagodas, as a World Cultural Heritage site.
·        Amid efforts for listing the Bagan Archaeological Zone as the World Cultural Heritage, a 6.8-magnitude earthquake destroyed some religious edifices and pagodas last August and the restoration works are being carried out by experts to maintain their original shape.

RBI issues new Rs. 500 notes
·        The Reserve Bank of India (RBI)  said a new batch of Rs. 500 banknotes with the inset letter ‘A’ in both the number panels of the current Mahatma Gandhi (new) series were being issued.
·        The note will bear the signature of RBI Governor Urjit Patel and the year of printing is 2017. The design of the ‘A’ notes is similar to earlier notes issued post the ban of old Rs. 500 and Rs. 1000 notes in November 2016.
Uttar Pradesh asks NHAI to build Bundelkhand Expressway
·        Uttar Pradesh has asked the central government to build Rs 10,000 -crore Bundelkhand Expressway besides other big-ticket road projects after the double whammy of an Rs 36,500-crore farm loan waiver plus the 7th Pay Commission pay-out of a similar amount, all to be borne in a single financial year, will leave its coffers strained.
India ratifies ILO pacts on child labour
·        India ratified two core conventions of International Labour Organisation on child labour a global commitment to end the worst form of child labour and to ensure minimum basic education to children.
·        “It is a historic moment for India as we are going to take another giant step to affirm our commitment for a child labour-free India by ratifying the two core conventions of ILO Conventions,“
Only 12 banks score 'high' in rendering best customer services
·        Only one fourth of the 51 banks in the country are rated 'high' for complying with Banking Codes and Standards Board of India (BCSBI) codes, which focuses on fair treatment of customers.
·        BCSBI is an independent body set up by the RBI. It's objectives are to promote good banking practises, setting minimum standards, increasing transparency, achieving higher operating standards and promoting a cordial banker-customer relationship.
·        Of the 12 banks rated 'high', only one public sector lender, IDBI Bank featured in the list and the rest were private and foreign banks, according to the annual code compliance rating released by BCSBI.

Kohli reclaims top spot in ODI rankings
·        India captain Virat Kohli reclaimed the top spot in the ICC ODI rankings for batsmen following the conclusion of the league matches in the Champions Trophy.
·        Kohli had entered the tourney 22 points behind top-ranked A.B. de Villiers of South Africa, who had been No.1 since February 25 this year, and 19 behind Australia’s David Warner. Shikhar Dhawan has vaulted five places to 10th.

‘India has 14.4 mn children with obesity’
·        India has the second highest number of obese children in the world after China, according to a study that found that 14.4 million children in the country have excess weight.
·        Globally, over two billion children and adults suffer from health problems related to being overweight or obese, and an increasing percentage of people die from these health conditions, researchers said.
·        Of the four million deaths attributed to excess body weight in 2015, nearly 40% occurred among people whose body mass index (BMI) fell below the threshold considered “obese”.
·        The findings represent “a growing and disturbing global public health crisis,” according to a paper published in The New England Journal of Medicine. In 2015, obesity affected 2.2 billion children and adults worldwide, or almost 1 in three of all people. This includes nearly 108 million children and more than 600 million adults with BMI exceeding 30, the threshold for obesity, according to the study. China had 15.3 million children with obesity and India 14.4 million.

‘SRK, Salman, Akshay are top earners’
·        Actors Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar are on the Forbes ’ annual list of the highest-earning entertainers in the world.
·        The Forbes list of the world’s highest-paid celebrities of 2017 has been topped by American rapper and entrepreneur Sean Combs, known by his more famous stage name ‘Diddy’, with earnings of $130 million. American singer Beyonce takes the second spot with earnings of $105 million and British author J.K. Rowling is at third place with $95 million.
·        Shah Rukh, 51, ranks 65th on the list, with earnings of $38 million, tied with singer and actor Jennifer Lopez.
·        Salman, 51, is at the 71st spot with $37 million in earnings, tied with English singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran.

·        Akshay, 49, is ranked 80th on the list with earnings of $35.5 million, tied with musician Bon Jovi.
