National:
Cabinet clears 5% interest subvention for crop loans
·        Amid growing protests over farm sector distress, the Cabinet has approved the extension of the interest subvention scheme for farmers to 2017-18.
·        Short-term crop loans up to Rs. 3 lakh will receive a subvention of 5%, effectively reducing the rate for farmers to 4%.
Health Ministry launches Intensified Diarrhoea Control Fortnight (IDCF)



·        The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has launched the Intensified Diarrhea Control Fortnight (IDCF) in order to intensify efforts to reduce child deaths due to diarrhoea.
·        The Ministry has made it a national priority to bring health outcomes among children to a level equitable with the rest of the world.  
·        Through this initiative, the Ministry will mobilize health personnel, State Governments and other stakeholders to prioritize investment in control of diarrhea, one of the most common childhood illnesses.
·         It aims to create mass awareness about the most effective and low-cost diarrhoea treatment— a combination of Oral Rehydration Salt (ORS) solution and Zinc tablets.
Cabinet approves proposal to introduce the Financial Resolution and Deposit Insurance Bill 2017 
·        The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has approved the proposal to introduce a Financial Resolution and Deposit Insurance Bill, 2017.
·        The Bill would provide for a comprehensive resolution framework for specified financial sector entities to deal with bankruptcy situation in banks, insurance companies and financial sector entities.

Yogi Adityanath opens new airport terminal at Gorakhpur

·        Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath inaugurated a new terminal at the Gorakhpur airport.
·        The Chief Minister, whose Lok Sabha constituency is Gorakhpur, said the terminal would provide better and more facilities to passengers.
International:

Australia agrees to pay $53 million to Manus Island detainees
·        The Australian government agreed to pay detainees on Manus Island more than A$70 million ($53 million) in the “largest settlement in a human rights class-action” in the country’s history.
·        Over 1,900 asylum seekers who were held, or are currently being held, at the government’s offshore detention centre on the island filed a class action suit claiming that the government did not deliver on its duty of care by housing them in.
Economy:


State oil firms sign pact to build $40 billion refinery

·        State-owned oil firms IOC, BPCL and HPCL signed an agreement to jointly set up the world’s largest refinery and petrochemical complex in Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra at a cost of $40 billion.
·        Indian Oil Corp. (IOC) will be the lead partner with 50% stake while Hindustan Petroleum Corp. Ltd.(HPCL) and Bharat Petroleum Corp. Ltd. (BPCL) will take 25% stake each.

CCI fines Hyundai Rs. 87 cr

·        The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has imposed a penalty of Rs. 87 crore on Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) for ‘anti-competitive conduct.’
·        The CCI found HMIL to be in contravention of the provisions of the Competition Act, 2002, for imposing arrangements upon its dealers which resulted into Resale Price Maintenance (RPM) in sale of passenger cars manufactured by it.

RBI imposes curbs on Central Bank

·        The Reserve Bank of India has put state-run lender, Central Bank of India, under prompt corrective action (PCA) due to a sharp increase in bad loans.

In a first, India to put dedicated cell to promote Russian investments

·        India for the first time will put in place a dedicated cell to promote Russian investments in the country to take forward St Petersburg vision statement that seeks to open new vistas of economic engagement.
·        The idea to create this cell was mooted by PM Narendra Modi when he met CEOs of India and Russia in presence of President Vladimir Putin on June 1 after the annual summit in St Petersburg.
Railways introduce upgraded 'Humsafar' coaches


·        Aiming to enhance the train travel experience, the Railways are launching new 'Humsafar' coaches equipped with facilities like GPS-based passenger information system, and fire and smoke detectors.
·        The coaches will also have mobile charging points and reading lights for each passenger along with easy upper berth climbing arrangement after getting feedback from passengers.
Oxford University Press launches compact English - English Assamese Dictionary
·        Oxford University Press (OUP) announced the launch of the Compact English-English Assamese Dictionary.
·        The Oxford Compact English-English Assamese Dictionary is a addition to OUP’s 23 (twenty-three) existing bilingual dictionaries in Indian Languages.
NITI Aayog proposes 26% strategic sale in Shipping Corporation of India
·        NITI Aayog has proposed strategic sale of about 26 per cent stake in Shipping Corporation of India, which could fetch about Rs 960 crore to the exchequer.
·        According to sources, the core group of secretaries on disinvestment, headed by the cabinet secretary, discussed the proposal and has mandated the Shipping Ministry to find out legal hassles, if any, in the process.

Nod for Insolvency Bill for financial entities

·        The Union Cabinet approved the introduction of a new Bill to resolve bankruptcy cases affecting financial sector entities, including banks and insurance companies.
·        The Financial Resolution and Deposit Insurance Bill 2017, when enacted, will have a provision for the setting up of a Resolution Corporation, and would also see the repealing or amendment of several resolution-related provisions in Acts pertaining to the particular sectors.

IIT-Kharagpur team develops wearable technology from silk
·        A team of experts at the Indian Institute of Technology - Kharagpur has fashioned a hybrid material based on silk protein called silk fibroin.
·        This novel material has the potential to spawn prototype textile-based smart electronic devices for soldiers and defence personnel as well as for biomedical applications.
Jupiter is the oldest planet in solar system
·        Jupiter - the largest planet in our solar system - is also the oldest, say scientists who found that the gas giant formed within four million years after the formation of the Sun.
·        Knowing the age of Jupiter is key for understanding how the solar system evolved towards its present-day architecture. Although models predict that Jupiter formed relatively early, until now, its formation has never been dated.

Envoys to Italy, Denmark, Belgium, EU appointed

·        The government appointed ambassadors to Italy, Denmark, Belgium and the European Union.

·        Gaitri Issar Kumar, a 1986-batch IFS officer, is India’s next ambassador to Belgium. She will also be accredited as India’s ambassador to the EU, the external affairs ministry said. Reenat Sandhu, a 1989-batch IFS officer, will move to Italy, while Ajit Vinayak Gupte (1991 batch) heads for Denmark.
